The sleepy village of Galera is on Granadas high plateau, a green valley cut through by a zig-zagging river overlooked by its inhabitants whose cave houses and historic recollections of a multitude of cultures have left their mark on this land. Despite having a small population, the village is full of attractive qualities. Its intense history and pre-historic past can be witnessed in its archaeological sites, village museum and castle of caves close by. Road links to Almeria, Murcia, Granada, Malaga and Jaen are excellent: as are links to the coast and the many areas of natural beauty such as the largest lake in Andalucia (Lago Negratin); the natural parks of the Sierra Oscense,Sierra de Huescar, Sierra Seca and Marmolance. It is an area of surprising and vigourous beauty; an "open air museum".
